How to Launch Your Own Spray Product from Scratch

How to Launch Your Own Spray Product from Scratch

Your own spray product is launched in six phases: brief and feasibility, formula and samples, documentation and registration, production, labelling and shipping. With Ilerspray, the initial approach arrives in under 72 hours, the technical and commercial proposal within one working week, and the full project takes an average of 6 to 10 weeks.

That lead time does not include the time a biocide authorisation takes when the product needs one, which has to be added to the schedule.

What Do I Need to Launch a Spray Product?

You do not need a formula or a plant: you need a brief the manufacturer can turn into a proposal. These are the details Ilerspray's form asks for, and the more specific they are, the more precise the first answer:

Brief item Example
Product type Household, automotive, industrial or cosmetics
Desired format 400 ml tinplate aerosol
Estimated annual volume In units
Target date Your launch quarter
Market and requirements Sales countries, regulations, brand

If you are worried about sharing the idea, you can ask for a standard NDA before giving details.

The Six Phases, from Brief to Pallet

Product development follows this order, and skipping a phase means redoing the ones after it:

  1. Brief and feasibility. The technical team assesses feasibility and proposes an initial approach in under 72 hours.
  2. Formula and samples. The laboratory develops the formula, or adapts yours, and produces samples for you to approve the fragrance, spray and performance.
  3. Validation and compliance. The technical data sheet, the safety data sheet and the regulatory registration, if the product requires it, are prepared.
  4. Production and filling. The batch is made on the certified lines, with batch-by-batch quality control.
  5. Labelling and pallet. Units are labelled, grouped and palletised to your logistics specifications.
  6. Shipping. EXW delivery from Lleida or international logistics coordination.

Which Registration Does Your Product Need?

It depends on what the product does, and it is worth knowing before formulating, because it changes the schedule:

If your product is Before selling it needs
A cosmetic (deodorant, hairspray) Responsible person, PIF and CPNP notification
A biocide (insecticide, disinfectant) Prior authorisation and entry in the register
Any other aerosol Safety data sheet and a compliant label

Cosmetics follow Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 and biocides follow Regulation (EU) 528/2012. Every aerosol sold in Spain also carries the information required by Royal Decree 1381/2009: the name and address or registered trade mark of the person placing it on the market, the conformity symbol, the batch code, the net contents and the pressurised-container warning.

How Long Does the First Batch Take?

Initial approach
under 72 hours
Technical and commercial proposal
within one working week
Full project
6 to 10 weeks on average
Batch size
flexible
Plant capacity
over 12 million units/year

The formula moves the timeline most: starting from a proven base needs fewer rounds of samples than a development from scratch. Every project is different: some are solved with a single sample, while others need a sample a month for months until the formula is right.

💡 Tip from our technical team: settle the label claims before asking for samples. A new claim halfway through the project can change the formula, the registration and the artwork at once.
