How to Create Your Own Aerosol Brand

How to Create Your Own Aerosol Brand

Launching an aerosol brand does not require building a plant or hiring your own engineers. With a certified contract manufacturer, you define the product and the brand; the manufacturer handles formulation, packaging, and quality control. The entire process, from the first technical meeting to the first batch being ready, can be completed in weeks.

How the Contract Manufacturing Model Works

Aerosol contract manufacturing is an agreement in which a specialized manufacturer produces complete units that the client markets under their own brand. The client does not need machinery, a laboratory, or technical staff; they access all that infrastructure through the contract.

The manufacturer handles four phases of the process. First, custom formulation: technicians develop the formula adjusted to the product specifications, verifying ingredient compatibility and stability. Second, packaging design and selection, with labeling adapted to the client's brand image. Third, filling on automated lines: the product is loaded into the empty container, the valve is installed and sealed, the propellant is injected through it, and the weight of each unit is verified. Fourth, a 50 °C hot water bath to detect possible leaks before the batch leaves the plant.

The result is a finished product, ready for distribution, featuring the visual identity and formula defined by the client.

Which Sectors Can a Private Aerosol Brand Serve?

The aerosol format is present in practically all consumer and industrial segments. In Spain, personal care represents 40% of production, household and cleaning 30%, and industrial, automotive, and pharmaceutical applications the remaining 30%. This distribution indicates that a niche exists for both a premium cosmetics line and a specialized industrial lubricant.

The most common sectors for contract manufacturing are cosmetics and hygiene (deodorants, hair sprays, personal care products), household (air fresheners, insecticides, household cleaners), automotive (dashboard, wheel, and upholstery cleaners, engine protectors), and industry (degreasers, lubricants, protectors for equipment in extreme conditions).

💡 Technical advice: before choosing a segment, consult with the manufacturer's formulation team. Some niches, such as cosmetics, are subject to specific regulations (ISO 22716/2017) that the manufacturer must already comply with; this requirement ceases to be an obstacle and becomes a competitive advantage for your brand from the very first batch.

Certifications That Protect Your Brand from the Start

Working with a certified manufacturer transfers the quality guarantee directly to the product you market. The two key certifications in aerosol manufacturing are ISO 9001/2015, which accredits the quality management system throughout the production process, and ISO 22716/2017, which regulates specific good manufacturing practices for cosmetic products.

For a new brand, this point is particularly relevant: a certification that takes years for an in-house plant to obtain comes as standard when the manufacturer already possesses it. The client can communicate this standard to their distributors and end customers from day one.

What Volumes and Timelines Are Realistic for a First Launch?

Contract manufacturing allows you to start with moderate volumes and scale as demand grows. A manufacturer with a capacity of more than 12 million units per year can adapt planning to both a small initial run and large-volume orders for national distribution or export.

Regarding timelines, the advantage over in-house manufacturing is structural: while setting up your own plant can take years, working with a contract manufacturer allows you to have the first batch on the market within a few weeks of finalizing the formulation and packaging design.

Flexibility also extends to target markets. A manufacturer with logistics close to international ports streamlines distribution both in the domestic market and to the European Union, North Africa, or South America.

How to Choose the Right Contract Manufacturer

Not all manufacturers offer the same level of integration. The criteria that make a difference in a selection process are accumulated experience in the sector, current quality certifications, in-house formulation capacity (a manufacturer that only packages is not the same as one that also formulates), full traceability of the production process, and flexibility to adapt to varying volumes.

Geographic location also has a direct impact on logistics costs and supply chain agility, especially when the final destination includes European markets.

Ilerspray has been manufacturing aerosols in Torres de Segre (Lleida) since 1968, with a technical team boasting more than 25 years of experience in the sector and 100% in-house production. If your brand project is in the definition phase or you already have the specifications ready, the technical team can guide you in the initial call regarding formulation, volumes, and timelines.
